Stephanie Mullins Artist Statement

STYLE
As I have been drawn to art since early childhood, my style has continuously morphed and developed. More recently, my subjects have focused on human faces and expressions, as well as other natural forms. Certain aspects of my art, however, have been constant: perhaps most prominently, a strong focus on color. I often apply a bold color palette, specifically when working with certain paints and oil pastels, as part of an impressionist style and application of media. Surrealism has also been a theme throughout my recent artwork, specifically in pieces of realistic drawing. Another favorite media combination is watercolor and ink; commonly, I employ watercolor of a softer and subtler hue with ink drawing.

INFLUENCE
Whether visually present in my work or not, numerous artists and movements have heavily influenced my style and technique. Masters such as Donatello and Leonardo da Vinci have offered me invaluable lessons in technique and craft. Both Hieronymus Bosch and Salvador Dalí as avant-garde surrealists have commanded my interest in this genre. Impressionists such as Edouard Manet, Claude Monet, Camille Pissarro, and Vincent van Gogh, in combination with Fauvists such as Henri Matisse, have inspired not only utilization of bold colors, but also masterful manipulation of subject for mood. Individually, Paul Klee, Gustav Klimt, Andy Warhol, and Roberto Matta have also tremendously impacted my views and application of art.
